Inside the Ropes: Spieth crowned the 54th RBC Heritage Champion

Exclusive highlights, interviews and much more from Harbour Town Golf Links

Yeah, it's a bit of a surprise, I definitely felt like I was putting myself in the position, hold the whole this week to to win a golf tournament. Um and I just I was having a hard time early in the week adjusting to the speed differences from last week And then the whole started look small to me yesterday and and then just came out today and said I'm not gonna leave one putt short and and if they miss they miss and just try to be a little bit more aggressive and made just enough to to cap it and win the 2022 Rbc heritage champion Jordan Spieth welcome to inside the ropes, I'm Amy Zimmer RBC heritage wrapping up on easter sunday in dramatic fashion, speed earning his 13th PGA Tour victory first at Harbor Town. And it did not come easy after carding a final round of five under 66 Spieth would go into the clubhouse with the solo lead at 13 under after birdieing 13th with a lot of players still on the course including Patrick Connelly knew he had to stay warm. Here's Cantley now with the share of the lead with an opportunity to birdie, he just misses setting up for par. Then at the end it would come down to a two man playoff between speed and Cantlie going back to play the par 4 18, get this both would hit their tee shot just short and into the bunker nearly right next to each other. Now watch this shot Spieth from out of the bunker Nearly holed out for Eagle. Yeah, he would tap in for par and now the pressure on can't lay after putting too much on the shot out of the bunker from 35 ft. He would miss to bogey and speak to go on and win and he told me last night, she said You have to take five seconds now and she never comments on my golf and she said you need to take five seconds if you miss the part and you're gonna tap it in before you hit your tap in. And so I try to think about that today, there's a couple of times where I was just gonna rake it and I was like, no, I gotta take five seconds and and I'm just glad it didn't end up affecting it at all to be honest. Just made it a little more exciting. At the end of course, referring to his wife anne who you saw there on the screen, embracing him after his win. Take a look at this final leaderboard, of course, Spieth on top at 13 under after defeating can't lay in a playoff check out the rest of this jam packed leaderboard. A whopping seven golfers tied for third place, just one stroke behind including cam Davis who had a bogey free final round, shooting a solid 63 sunday jt posted who eagled on the front nine and also had a blemish free scorecard, firing a final round of 64 abstract and matt Kuchar Harold Varner the third in Shane Lowry all also finishing at 12 under. Get this overall 18 golfers finishing within four shots of champion Jordan Spieth time to bring in. Dave Williams. Now, Dave after Spieth's final round, we heard him explain to fans he couldn't sign autographs just yet because he had to get prepared for a possible playoff. However, he made a special promise to fans. Well that's right amy, he promised no matter what happened, he would meet fans back at the scorecard area to sign autographs and even after winning, he kept that promise, he did indeed. Almost an hour after he officially won and took part in the awards ceremony and fulfilled his media obligations. Speech went back to those hordes of kids waiting for that autographed and signed everything from hats, two flags, two golf balls. It certainly made the kids day and it's not something you see often from someone who had just won a tournament, but I'm pretty sure it's probably something all of the youngsters will remember for the rest of their lives and you might have been able to hear the young fans were even chanting Jordan's as he was signing autographs, truly a special moment indeed. Yeah, I was right there next to all those young kids waiting for an autograph, watching them taking photos of them and it was truly a moment that those Children will never forget. All right, thanks so much. Dave, Hey still to come on inside the ropes. A complete look at the final round of highlights. Stay with us. Mm hmm. Yeah, welcome back to inside the ropes despite a windy friday for the second round. The RBC heritage saw beautiful weather all week long on the course. Let's check in with our meteorologist Victorio coconuts now and while it was beautiful all week on my drive back to savannah tonight it was raining pretty hard. Can we expect the sunshine to return during the work week? Thankfully we can later tomorrow afternoon. So we're gonna keep this rain in the forecast through tonight and into early tomorrow morning. I'm glad the rain held off for most of the day heading through the evening hours tonight really started to fire up. We saw one pesky thunderstorm holding close to coastal Jasper Chatham and towards Beaufort right now this is dumped about five inches of rain over the last few hours. These will be, this will be the trend as we had overnight into early tomorrow morning, 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms still in the forecast, allow yourself extra time on the roadways as you head out the door early tomorrow morning but the rain should start to clear out by about 2 to 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon sunshine does return that allows temperatures head back to the seventies Buford tomorrow, 74 degrees hard. Even at 75 polar topping off at 76 then Richmond and Blackshear in the upper seventies. So again, 60% chance of rain for tomorrow morning, clearing out by the afternoon and then we're seeing some sunshine for the next few days. So 76 degrees for tomorrow, 60% chance for some rain. We could see a little bit of flooding on the roadways as we go into tomorrow morning again, extra time, have the umbrella ready to go clearing out by about two o'clock to three o'clock. Then sunshine sticks with us for about the next nine days. That cooler air lingers into Tuesday and Wednesday that keeps us in the lower seventies. We gradually start to warm up through the week background 80 degrees by next friday warming up to the mid eighties by monday 84 degrees, plenty of sunshine in the forecast as we go into the next week. So if you'd like to stay updated on the forecast out the door and on the go, you can always download the W J. C L. 22 news app. You can find it free in the google play or Apple app stores. All right, thanks so much victoria. Well, the leaderboard was constantly changing during the entire final round of the RBC Heritage. Let's take a look at the highlights. The blimp making an appearance at the final round of the RBC heritage and it would get a bird's eye view to some pretty exciting golf. Harold Varner the third had the lead entering the day, but he struggled to get above par for most of the round. In fact, he made only two birdies on the day. One of those coming here on number nine, Taking him to 12 under and still very much in the hunt. However, the person making the move this man right here, Jordan's speech, he was playing steady all day and then on number eight drains the terrific birdie putt, he keeps climbing the leaderboard. Other golfers however, still making noise and going after that tartan jacket 2014 matt Kuchar, One of those check out of the wonderful chip out of the bunker on nine, nestling with a couple of feet of the cup, he would birdie Kuchar finished at 12 under par, just a shot off the lead and then eric ruin was also one of those climbing to the top of the leaderboard at one point he knocks down the birdie on nine to grab a share of the lead. Second round leader, Patrick Kent Lake also saw time in the top spot, he knocks down a birdie here on number nine to take him to two on the 22 under par on the day, He was still tied for the lead as he arrived at 18 after missing a birdie to give him the outright lead, knocks down the par there to tie it up with Jordan Spieth. Meanwhile, Harold Varner the third had a chance to join the playoff party. However, his birdie tried, it comes up short on 18 painfully, take a look here, that's just short, So we'd go to a playoff on 18 and after his tee shot lands in the bunker it was Jordan Spieth with a magnificent chip to within one ft of the whole, he would tap in the birdie and that men can't, we had to knock down a long birdie to force the second playoff hole. However, it wasn't meant to be in Jordan Spieth is your 2022 RBC heritage champion. All right time to bring back in Dave Williams, Dave, you spent a lot of time on the course, sunday talking to golfers after their final round with the constant lead changes during sunday. How are most of the golfers feeling after turning in their scorecard? Well, amy, you know, it was a very competitive final round and the common theme seemed to be while golfers were of course wishing they were on top, they were happy with the overall tournament experience from the weather to the fans the same number as in regulation and hit a very similar shot with the same club obviously caught a different wind than what I was expecting the wind was supposed to be, you know, off the right if anything, a little down and I must have caught a little hurt and obviously with it plugged like that, it's impossible to get it close last two rounds were good, struck it better, you know, I I probably could have shot a few food shots lower, which was, which was nice the first two days, I probably could have shot any lower than I did. You know, I just scraped it around and you know, amy it was good to see brian have a nice couple of final rounds, there could have been different, but it's you know, it is a common theme to see the pros bring their family to the event because Harbor Town is the perfect destination of vacation with your family. You mentioned earlier by Jordan smith speaks with his wife there also he had his kids there and he talked today about how much of a relaxing experience this whole place was especially on the heels of the masters. That's right, especially after missing the cut at the Masters, he said coming into this tournament, he was looking for a much more relaxing environment and you get exactly that at Harbor Town at Sea Pines of course, it's beautiful. Get to ride the bikes around the great spot for family. Alright, thanks so much Dave coming up, we're going one on one with RBC Heritage Tournament Director steve Wilmot who shares his final thoughts on the event. You're watching inside the ropes, we'll be right back Yeah. Mhm. Welcome back to inside the ropes preparing for south Carolina's only PGA tour event is no easy task as it features over 100 and 30 professional golfers this year's tournament was back to full capacity for the first time since 2019 and was sold out for over 30 years. RBC Heritage Tournament Director steve Wilmot has been leading the way and our brick snow caught up with Wilmot during sunday's final round. The RBC Heritage survived the last couple of years with very few fans, thanks to the leadership of tournament Director steve Wilmot. Now the crowds are back to full strength and everybody is very relieved people missed it. I missed it, you know, from going from no Spectators to limited capacity and all of a sudden it's the vibe, the feel of what's happening this week has been tremendous and but now we're back, we're back with the 15% match and as well as some of our birdies programs and some of these other things and the, we're anticipating a great year with the crowds back the Heritage Classic Foundation will be the big beneficiary as they will be able to help so many deserving organizations around the area, You know, I thank the community, I thank them, you know, they're volunteers are our partners, the Spectators, you as the media as well too. I mean, we're all in this together, it's community, it's different than anywhere else and uh, unfortunately a part of it, but I'm telling you, it's a team effort. You know, we, we look forward to the next couple of weeks and hopefully making some big impacts of why we do what we do in this community for. Wilman has been great to hear the cheers all around the course, once again, kitty kitty christmas, but here it is easter sunday, but now it's exciting. I mean we have the best players in the world here with only 45 PGA Tour events every year. Willman feels fortunate to have one right here on the island and being the week following the master's, many involved consider it almost a vacation. This is a kind of a vacation for, for our players as well as the networks and being able to showcase. But these players are here on vacation, I get a chance to win $1 million. So I want to go on that vacation sometime. Well, there's no rest for the weary plans are already underway for the 2023 heritage From Harbour Town Rick Snow, WJCL 22 News. All right, thanks so much frick. The RBC heritage is much more than a golf tournament. The event donates millions of dollars to local charities. O'Reilly Miller has more. Giving back to charity is a huge part of what the RBC Heritage does each and every year since 1987, it's raised more than $47 million dollars for nonprofits in our area. And this year, now that the event is back to full capacity organizers are thrilled to get back to doing what they love most charities are probably the most important part of it and we give, you know, close between two and $3 million a year to local charities. One of those charities is Memory matters, which provides brain health education and memory care support to people in the low country and their team says their clients were hit hard by coronavirus covid drastically affected. Um, you know, the families that we serve every day drastically affected um, those with Alzheimer's and dementia. And the main reason is that self isolation. Another one of those nonprofits, the Deep Well Project, It works to provide food and emergency financial aid to Islanders in need and volunteers had to work overtime to keep up with demand during the pandemic. Either they've been sick and haven't been able to go to work or in many cases work wasn't there? They closed down so they've, they've been hurting both memory matters and deep well are just two of the many organizations that are part of this year's birdies for charity. Through the fundraiser, you can pledge a donation for every birdie made at the RBC Heritage 100% of your money goes to the charity of your choice and the Heritage Classic Foundation will match your donation by 15%. Every extra penny that we can get right now. It goes so much further. If you donate to memory matters. Those dollars stay right here and especially through the Heritage Classic Foundation. Um, your dollars will go so much further birdies for charity runs through sunday april 17th. If you would like to give we have the information you need on our website. W J Cl dot com now from Harbor Town. I'm Riley Miller back to you in the studio. All right, thanks so much Riley still to come here on inside the ropes. The golf's biggest stars, not the only one shining bright on sunday, Got special guests, made an appearance, We'll show you plus taking a look at that final RbC Heritage leaderboard that and more coming up right here on inside the ropes. Yeah, welcome back to inside the ropes. Dave Williams joining us again and Dave before the break I mentioned there was a very special guest on easter sunday at the RBC heritage and guests who I might have been talking about. Well of course that would be the easter bunny while you don't even have to think about it dry and you know what to the easter bunny, it wasn't very talkative at all today. He wasn't, but I at least got a photo with him. That's that's correct. Pretty special. A lot of kids were getting photos with him, definitely a fun way to spend easter sunday. Yes, it was indeed. And of course, you know the crowds, it certainly wasn't a bad day at all, soaking up a nice day at Harbor Town with family and friends and some outstanding golf action as well. Of course, crowds were out in full force for the entire tournament as this year's event was sold out sunday, Many uh spent the time seeking autographs from their favorite golfers are just hanging out, checking out the great golf in front of them. And for many of the kids in attendance it was just fun being able to get up close and personal with some of the world's best golfers. It's been pretty good. I've been rooting his first beef and I saw him today and he did really well today. I think it's pretty fun because you don't always get to talk to a professional players. Yeah, I would say speed did pretty well today too as he was crowned our RBC Heritage champion. Can ask for a more exciting easter, sunday too as that went to a playoff. Alright, one final look at the leaderboard, of course, python top at 13 under after defeating, can't lay in a playoff Check out the rest of this jam packed leaderboard. A whopping seven golfers tied for third place, just one stroke behind that included cam Davis who had a bogey free final round, shooting a solid 63 sunday yet nice easter for him then Jt Posten who eagled on the front nine also had a blemish free scorecard firing a final round of 64 than sub Straker, matt Kuchar Harold Varner the third Shane. Lowry also all finishing at 12 under. However, very close to forcing a way bigger playoff than what we saw because get this over 18 golfers finishing within four shots of champion Jordan Spieth, that's going to wrap it up for this inside the ropes for the 54th annual RBC Heritage. Once again, it was action packed and did not disappoint as again going to a playoff can never leave fans disappointed. And it only took Jordan Spieth just one hole to slip on the iconic plaid jacket and be crowned the RBC Heritage champion in his first ever career victory at Harbor Town golf links. So, a very special time for him. And of course, to one really cool quick fact about that is actually last easter Jordan Spieth won on the PGA Tour, winning the Valero texas open on easter sunday. Now here we are a year later, Jordan Spieth once again crowned the champion on easter. Something about easter for Jordan's speed. Pretty special. All right, thank you so much for joining us tonight. We'll see you back here on W J C L 22 news in the morning, starting at 4 30. Have a great night
